About the Patient

WSI Pain Management Program

North Dakota Workforce Safety and Insurance (WSI) is pleased to offer a new pain management program.  The North Dakota Pharmacy Service Corporation, through its About the Patient program, will be administering this program.

The goal of the Pain Management program is to help injured workers better understand and control their pain.  There is a series of up to seven visits with a designated provider, which the patient can select, over 16 weeks.  The visits will take from 30-60 minutes to complete.  The provider will review the patient health history, goals, and all of their current medications.  The provider will then educate the patient on their health conditions, make recommendations to improve medication therapy, and refer them to other health care providers as needed.  All information will be shared with their doctor to make sure that everything is done to meet their medication and health goals.  The patient's health will be improved by utilizing the specialties of a variety of health care professionals.

Enrollment in the opt-out pilot program is automatic.  Injured workers in Burleigh, Morton, Stark, and Walsh counties are elibilge for the program.  Participating patients do not need to get their medications filled at the same pharmacy that is used for the pain management visits.  Enrolled patient may opt-out of the program by contacting the Clinical Coordinator.

A standard patient care process is used at each provider location.  The process used will having the following occur:

-     Patients will meet with their provider at the provider office and they will answer any questions or concerns the patient has about their medications and health.

-     Patients will discuss their health and medications. The provider may ask them a number of questions to understand their medication use and to determine how well they are working.

-     The patient and provider will discuss health and medication goals and what the patient is willing to do to meet these goals.

-     The provider will develop a plan with patient input to make sure the patient is getting the most benefit with the least side effects from their medication. Other aspects of the plan may include exercise, diet, and other healthy lifestyle changes. Any recommended changes to the current regimen will be communicated with their primary doctor to make sure they are aware of, and agree with, the plan.

-    A summary of the visit, the goals established, and a medication diary will either be provided to the patient so they have a record and written reminder of the goals. The patient may receive an additional copy to share with their physician or the provider can mail a copy to the physician at the patient request.

Patient participation is voluntary, and they can opt-out of the program or change providers by calling the Clinical Coordinator at 1-888-326-4657 or by clicking here.
